Back to School means Spa Treatment for Mom

The kids are back in school and you deserve a day of pampering.  The good news is you can do it at home without breaking the bank.  For starters, turn off the tv and phones.  Put on soft, relaxing music and you are halfway there.  Other mood setters are candles, steam, and wine.

Spa Index has an excellent recipe for an Almond Body Scrub to gently and thoroughly exfoliate the top layer of dead skin cells. Body scrubs feel wonderful and relieve the itch of flaking skin.  Yogurt and milk are natural exfoliates known as alpha hydroxy acids, and they will slough off dead skin cells even without the scrub.

END OF SUMMER ALMOND BODY SCRUB

by Spaindex.com

As the end of the summer season approaches, many of us are sporting that attractive tell-tale sign of fun in the sun:  Peeling skin.

  • 2/3 cup ground almonds
  • 1/3 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon of herbs (lavender, chamomile, etc) (optional)
  • Plain yogurt, milk, or buttermilk, sufficient to make a paste
  • Essential Oils for scent (optional)

Combine the dry ingredients in a blender or food processor until they are reduced to a coarse meal. Keep this “scrub base” in a glass jar with a screw top in your refrigerator until ready to use. When you want to use the scrub base, scoop out 1/4 cup into a small bowl, and stir in enough of the liquid ingredients (vary it by what you have on hand — yogurt and milk are best, but water works) to make a paste.

Scoop up the paste with your hands or a washcloth, and rub over your body to exfoliate peeling skin.  Rinse thoroughly.

  1. Thank you for mentioning our wonderful Almond Scrub, we appreciate it!

We’ll have to try your sour cream trick, which we see posted as a tip for making guacamole creamier and extending it, too. That sounds good. Another way to do it, in the same recipe, is to add a handful of frozen peas, which is how the Golden Door spa both extends their guacamole, and, reduces the fat from the Avocado without sacrificing that wonderful avocado flavor or the bright green color! I think we should try both at the same time.

    • Love your website – great resource. Thanks for the frozen pea tip. I agree – we’ll have to try the sour cream (or greek yogurt) and peas. I see a great recipe in the making. Thanks for your comment.

  2. mm sounds like a nice way to treat yourself

Like it but….ground almonds are kinda expensive! and they can be a tad too rough for your skin…my suggestion? Plain ‘ol cheap sugar. Nice even sized granules, does not sting like salt (if you just shaved your legs) and there is plenty of it because it is cheap! So you don’t have to grind up the sugar…it is all ready to go…..and if you think you are going to not use this in the next 3 days – you better put a preservative in there like Vitamin E! (capsule form) A great scrub is perfect for this time of year!
